Search for a truffle hunt in Tuscany and you get a wall of near-identical listings between $99 and $1,012. They are not the same experience with different markups. They are four different days out sharing a name.
The hunt itself — a dog, an oak wood, forty-five minutes to ninety — is roughly the same everywhere and is rarely what people remember. What differs is the season you booked into, and what happens after the dog finds something.

First: which truffle is actually in season?
Almost no listing tells you this, and it is the single most common cause of disappointment. Tuscany has a truffle in season nearly all year — but not the truffle.
| Species | In season in Tuscany | What it is |
|---|
| White — Tuber magnatum | October to December | The prized one. San Miniato and the Siena hills |
| Black winter — T. melanosporum | November to March | Uncommon in Tuscany; needs cold, dry weather |
| Marzuolo / bianchetto — T. borchii | January to April | Widespread here; strong, garlicky |
| Summer scorzone — T. aestivum | May to September | The one most summer visitors actually find |
Those are Visit Tuscany’s published dates, and the harvest calendar is set by regional law rather than by custom. So a hunt in July is a real hunt with a real dog finding a real truffle — a scorzone, which is a decent ingredient and a fraction of the price of the white. If you are picturing shaved white truffle over tagliolini, you need October to December, and our season page tracks what is in season now.
Second: you are mostly buying lunch
Read the reviews across every operator on the platform and a pattern shows up immediately. The hunt gets a sentence — the dog was lovely, we found three. The meal gets a paragraph.
That is not a criticism, it is the product. The hunt is short by nature; a dog either finds something in the first half hour or the ground is wrong. Everything above roughly $150 is buying the rest of the day:
- $99–$140 — the hunt, a tasting, and you are away by lunchtime.
- $150–$230 — the hunt plus a proper sit-down meal, usually with wine, sometimes a cooking class.
- $270–$500 — private, or a winery lunch, or both.
- Above $500 — a private day with transfer from Florence, priced per group rather than per head on some listings.
Price the meal, not the walk, and the ladder suddenly makes sense.
So which hunt?
Four genuinely different days, priced accordingly:

From $105 · 4.9 ★ (95 reviews) · Hunt & tasting
The hunt and a tasting without the long lunch. If the dog is what you came for, this is the honest version.

The fourth shape is the winery day — a hunt attached to a wine estate lunch, from $488 — which is a different holiday again and is compared in full on our Tuscany page.
Two things nobody mentions
It is a dog, not a pig. Italy banned pigs for truffle hunting in 1985 — they root destructively and, more to the point, they eat the find. Every hunt you can book uses dogs, most often the curly-coated lagotto romagnolo, the only breed the international kennel federation recognises specifically for truffles. The dog indicates; the human digs.
You almost certainly do not keep the truffle. This surprises people badly. On most tours the truffles found go into the lunch you then eat, which is the point — but very few listings promise you leave with one in your pocket, and the good ones say so plainly. If taking a truffle home matters, check the inclusions before booking and expect to buy it separately. We cover this on the worth-it page.
Where in Tuscany?
San Miniato is the white-truffle town — the National White Truffle Exhibition runs there across four weekends in November, and if you are travelling for the white truffle specifically, that is the place and the month.
San Gimignano has the deepest-reviewed hunts on the platform and pairs them with the towers and the wine.
Chianti is where the cooking-class combinations concentrate. Volterra and Arezzo are the cheaper, quieter options — Volterra starts at $99, the lowest here. Siena and Trequanda run smaller, more rural hunts.
All sit between about 45 and 90 minutes from Florence. Most tours either include transfer or ask you to meet there, and that distinction is worth checking before you rent a car for the day — the Florence page covers the transfer question.
We are not affiliated with any truffle-hunting operator, consortium, or with the Comune di San Miniato. Tours shown here are sold by GetYourGuide, and we earn a commission if you book through our links at no extra cost to you.
How these facts were checked
Written 4 September 2026:
- The Tuscan harvest calendar by species — white October–December, black winter November–March, marzuolo January–April, scorzone May–September — is from Visit Tuscany, the regional tourism board. Tuscany’s harvest calendar is set under regional law 16/2008; note that Piedmont’s dates differ, which matters if you are comparing with Alba (we set that out on the Italy page).
- San Miniato as the white-truffle centre, with a substantial September-to-December harvest, and the National White Truffle Exhibition across four weekends in November, are from Visit Tuscany’s San Miniato pages.
- Italy’s 1985 ban on truffle pigs, on ecological grounds, and the lagotto romagnolo as the only internationally recognised truffle breed, are consistently reported across breed and industry sources.
- Prices, ratings, review counts and inclusions come from the booking platform’s live listings for 20 truffle tours across Tuscany, captured 4 September 2026. Review depth in this niche is modest — the best-reviewed hunt here holds 102 reviews — so we quote the real numbers rather than implying a deeper market than exists.
Harvest dates shift with the weather and operators change their itineraries. Confirm the species and the inclusions with your operator before booking if either matters to you.
