Check Which Truffle Is Actually in Season
This is the step nearly every listing skips. Tuscany's prized white truffle runs October to December; the marzuolo takes over January to April, and the summer scorzone runs May to September. Hunts operate year-round because there is almost always something to find — but the species changes, and so does what ends up on the plate. If you booked expecting white truffle in July, you were always going to be disappointed.
Decide Whether You Are Buying a Walk or a Meal
The hunt itself is usually 45 minutes to an hour and a half in the woods behind a dog. Almost everything above $150 is buying the rest of the day — a long lunch, a winery, a pasta or cooking class. Reviewers are consistent about this: the hunt is charming and short, and the meal is what people describe at length afterwards. Price the meal, not the walk.

San Miniato is the white-truffle town and holds the national exhibition across four weekends in November. San Gimignano has the deepest-reviewed hunts on the platform. Expect a Trained Dog, Not a Pig
The truffle pig is a museum fact in Italy — pigs eat the truffle and have been banned from truffle hunting here since 1985. Every Florence truffle listing is really a countryside tour with a Florence label. Whether it collects you is the difference between a day out and a car-hire problem.
There are no truffle woods in Florence. Every tour titled “Florence truffle hunting” happens somewhere else — San Gimignano, Chianti, the hills toward Pisa, sometimes as far as Volterra or Arezzo. The city is the marketing label and the meeting point, not the location.
That is completely normal and not a criticism. But it makes one question decisive, and most listings bury it: does the price include getting you there?

Transfer included. You are collected in Florence, driven out, hunt, eat, and are returned. Simplest, and priced accordingly — this is most of what sits above $250, and some of what sits below it.
Meet there. The listing quotes a lower price and a meeting point in the countryside. Fine if you already have a car; a genuine problem if you do not, because these places are not on a convenient bus. The saving usually evaporates against a day’s car hire plus fuel plus parking.
In the city, no hunt at all. A real category worth knowing about: Florence has truffle cooking experiences — a pasta class, the flambé cheese wheel, a tasting menu — that never leave town, from about $116. If what you actually want is to eat truffle rather than walk behind a dog, that is a cheaper and more reliable way to do it, and it is not weather- or season-dependent in the same way.

Is it a good use of a Florence day?
Honestly: only if you have four or more days in the city. Florence itself takes two or three days to do without rushing, and a truffle hunt is a half to a full day outside it, most of which is driving and eating.
If you have a week in Tuscany, it is one of the better countryside days available — better than most wine-bus tours, because you are doing something rather than being shown things. If you have three days in Florence and have not seen the Uffizi, the truffle hunt is the wrong call, and the in-city cooking class is the sensible compromise.

He and Pipo found five black truffles (the rarer white truffles not in season) walking on a path along a forest. At the lunch after (we highly advise this add-on), we got to taste our own just-collected truffles over pasta, along with local wine and other treats. A morning start also gets you out of Florence before the day's traffic. Expect to be collected or to meet somewhere between 8am and 10am, and to be back in the city mid-afternoon on a half-day, or early evening on a full one.
