The hunt is much the same wherever you go: a trained dog, an oak wood, under two hours. What actually changes between San Gimignano, Chianti, Volterra and San Miniato is the countryside you do it in and the meal at the end.
The Experience
From the operator's own listing — the walk, the dogs and the tasting.
Good to know: -Even though the forest we will travel through will be quite easy, comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended.
Meet, walk, dig, eat. The last part takes the longest.
This is the step nearly every listing skips. Tuscany's prized white truffle runs October to December; the marzuolo takes over January to April, and the summer scorzone runs May to September. Hunts operate year-round because there is almost always something to find — but the species changes, and so does what ends up on the plate. If you booked expecting white truffle in July, you were always going to be disappointed.
The hunt itself is usually 45 minutes to an hour and a half in the woods behind a dog. Almost everything above $150 is buying the rest of the day — a long lunch, a winery, a pasta or cooking class. Reviewers are consistent about this: the hunt is charming and short, and the meal is what people describe at length afterwards. Price the meal, not the walk.
San Miniato is the white-truffle town and holds the national exhibition across four weekends in November. San Gimignano has the deepest-reviewed hunts on the platform. Chianti pairs the hunt with cooking classes, and Volterra and Arezzo are the cheaper, quieter options. All are 45 minutes to 90 minutes from Florence, and most tours include transfer or meet you there.
The truffle pig is a museum fact in Italy — pigs eat the truffle and have been banned from truffle hunting here since 1985. Every hunt you can book uses dogs, usually the curly-coated lagotto romagnolo. The dog does the work; your job is to keep up, watch the dig, and not be disappointed that the whole thing takes less time than the lunch that follows.

The Independent Guide
The regions differ in scenery, price and what the meal looks like — not in whether you will find a truffle.
The hunt is the constant. Everything around it is the variable.
Wherever you book in Tuscany, the shape is the same: you meet a handler and one or two dogs, walk into a wood of oak, hazel or poplar, and follow them for somewhere between forty-five minutes and ninety. The dog indicates, someone digs, and you look at a truffle. It is genuinely charming, and it is genuinely short.
So choose on the two things that actually differ — the countryside, and the table.
San Gimignano has the deepest-reviewed hunts on the platform in Tuscany — 102 and 95 reviews on the two leading ones, which in this thin-reviewed niche counts for a lot. You get the towers, the Vernaccia wine, and the most-trodden path. From $105 for the hunt and tasting; $221 with lunch and wine.
Chianti is where the cooking-class combinations concentrate. The best-rated hunt in the whole set is here — 5.0 from 86 reviews at $186 — and it pairs the walk with making the pasta the truffle goes onto. If you want the afternoon filled, this is the region.
San Miniato is the white-truffle town and the one to choose if the species matters. Its National White Truffle Exhibition runs four weekends in November. Be aware that its GetYourGuide listings are thinner than San Gimignano’s — the town’s reputation runs well ahead of its bookable-online supply.
Volterra is the cheapest way in at $99, and the most atmospheric town of the lot — Etruscan, alabaster, high and windy.
Arezzo, Siena and Trequanda are the quiet options: smaller operators, fewer reviews, more countryside per euro. $128 to $279.
All sit between roughly 45 and 90 minutes of Florence.
Not the truffle. The day.
Three rungs that actually mean something:
The walk, the dogs and a tasting, back with the day intact. The honest minimum, and well reviewed.
Check dates →The most-reviewed truffle experience in Tuscany, and the version most people mean when they picture this.
See the full day →The premium shape: hunt, then a proper wine-estate table. Note the thin review count — it is a small operation.
See the winery day →Prices, ratings and review counts from our September 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing — treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
Worth saying plainly, because it affects how you should read any recommendation on this subject: truffle hunting is a thin-reviewed niche on the booking platforms. Across twenty Tuscan truffle tours the best-reviewed has 102 reviews and the median is in the low twenties. Compare that with a city walking tour carrying four thousand.
That is not a warning about quality — the ratings are uniformly high, several are perfect fives — but it does mean a single bad day weighs heavily in a score, and that “5.0” on six reviews tells you much less than “4.8” on a hundred. Where we have pointed you at something, we have generally pointed at the deeper sample.
Which species you will actually find is a separate question, answered on the season page. Coming from the city, the Florence page covers the transfer question, and whether the whole thing is worth the money is argued here.

"Domenico was a great and informative guide, and we had a wonderful time with him and his truffle dog Titta! We made a truffle appertif with the delicious truffle we received. We would love to do the tour again!"
"This tour was great! Domenico was a fantastic guide and his truffle dog, Cuba, was very friendly and great at her job. 😃 I would definitely recommend this tour."
"Super fun and interesting. Domenico and his sniffer dog search enthusiastically, and eventually dig up the truffles for us, if the dog isn't ahead of us! Definitely worth booking this trip!!!"

"Terrific guy! Lots of knowledge. Clearly passionate about his craft."
"We had an amazing time with Domenico and his two super talented dogs. Domenico is extremely knowledgeable about the truffles and the land and is very enthusiastic to share it. Because he comes from a family of truffle hunters, he also knows a lot about the background and culture of truffle hunting. Doing the experience of truffle hunting with him and the dogs is something we would recommend to anyone!"

Where to go, what it costs, and how much the region actually changes.
San Gimignano for the best-reviewed hunts, San Miniato for the white truffle, Chianti for the cooking classes. San Gimignano carries the two deepest review samples in the Tuscan set - 102 and 95 - which matters in a niche this thinly reviewed. San Miniato is the white-truffle town and holds the national exhibition in November, though its bookable online supply is thinner than its reputation suggests. Volterra is the cheapest entry at $99 and the most striking town. Arezzo, Siena and Trequanda are the quiet rural options.
Between about 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the region. Chianti and the San Gimignano area are the closest practical options; Volterra and Arezzo are further. No hunt happens in Florence itself - there are no truffle woods in the city, so every 'Florence truffle hunting' listing is a countryside tour with a Florence meeting point. The critical thing to check is whether transfer is included or whether you are expected to drive yourself. We cover that on the Florence page.
From $99 in Volterra to $1,012 for a private Florence day, with the sensible middle at $105 to $230. What separates them is almost never the hunt - it is the meal, the group size and whether transfer is included. $99 to $140 buys the walk and a tasting. $150 to $230 adds a real lunch and often a cooking class, and is where the value concentrates. Above $270 you are buying privacy, a winery estate, or a car from Florence.
They are honest but thin, and worth reading with that in mind. Across twenty Tuscan truffle tours the deepest review sample is 102 and the median sits in the low twenties - compare that with a Florence walking tour carrying four thousand. Ratings are uniformly high, 4.6 to 5.0, which is genuinely encouraging. But a 5.0 built on six reviews tells you far less than a 4.8 built on a hundred, and one bad day moves a small sample a long way. Where we recommend, we generally point at the deeper sample.
Only if you book a meet-there tour - and that is the distinction most listings bury. Some Tuscan hunts include transfer from Florence or a nearby town; others quote a lower price and give a rural meeting point that no useful bus reaches. The apparent saving on a meet-there listing usually disappears once you add a day of car hire, fuel and parking. Read the meeting-point line before the price line.
Better for white truffle specifically; worse for choice and for review depth. San Miniato is the genuine centre of Tuscan white truffle country and its November exhibition is the real thing. But on the booking platforms its truffle listings are few and lightly reviewed, while San Gimignano's are the most established in the region. If you are travelling in the autumn specifically for Tuber magnatum, San Miniato is the more authentic choice. Otherwise San Gimignano gives you a better-evidenced booking.
